Apollo is a registered bay Arabian gelding standing 15 hands tall. My oldest daughter Jaydyn chose him to go and meet. We didn’t know all the things we should have been looking for when buying our first horse, but we thought we knew the basics.
November 2021, we arrived at the owner’s farm. We instantly fell in love with Apollo and anything we should’ve looked at flew out the window. The owner lunged Apollo and he looked pretty good to us. We immediately said yes and filled out the paperwork. Because it was winter and we had nowhere to bring Apollo, we agreed to pay the owner to board him until spring.
For months, we talked about Apollo and visited him as often as we could. We counted down the days until spring, dreaming about trail rides and all the adventures ahead.
When spring arrived, we knew Apollo needed some training. I reached out to a friend who has owned and trained horses for many years, and asked if she would take him and train him for us. Apollo was very green. He hadn’t been handled much for most of his life.
The day came and my friend showed up at the farm and we got ready to load Apollo into the trailer. This was not an easy task. Somehow, my friend managed to get him inside. We quickly shut the trailer door, and she scrambled out the side window as Apollo made it very clear he was not happy. She told us as she got out that this is a “dangerous horse”.
As I stood there watching the trailer pull away, I couldn’t help but wonder… what had we just gotten ourselves into?
