Welcome to the crew!
Life Between Horses wouldn’t be complete without introducing the animals who make every day an adventure. Our home is full of personalities, muddy footprints, fur, and plenty of stories waiting to be told.
As you get to know everyone, you may notice some of our animals’ names have a little something in common. There’s a story behind that… but I’ll save it for another post.
The Horses
APOLLO
Apollo is a 2016 registered Arabian gelding who stands 15hh tall. Apollo came into our lives through an ad we found on Kijiji, and from the moment he arrived, he quickly made himself part of our family.
Apollo is your typical “class clown”. He has a personality all his own and seems to surprise us every day with his antics. Whether he’s making us laugh, keeping us on our toes, or showing off his goofy side, Apollo always finds a way to make his presence known.
Life with Apollo is never boring and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
FINNIGHAN (AKA FINN)
Finnighan is a 2013 paint cross gelding who stands 15.3hh tall. Finn also came into our lives through an ad we found on Kijiji and he is the sweetest horse you will ever meet.
Finn’s personality is like that of an old man. Not a grumpy old man but just a laid back, never in a hurry, peaceful horse. He isn’t bothered by much and has surprised us in many ways throughout the years. If you want to cuddle a horse then Finn is your guy.
The Dogs
MILEY
Miley is a black and white Siberian Husky and the oldest of the crew. I found Miley from a reputable breeder in southern Manitoba. She had a cross on her forehead and that was my sign that she was the one for me; considering I was going through my divorce at the time.
Miley is definitely the alpha of the crew and an exceptional escape artist who will sit, observe and plan her next moves . Her mind is incredible and she amazes me everyday.
KODA
Koda is a red and white Siberian Husky. Finding a husky in this colour was a bit difficult but I came across an online ad one day and knew I had to go see and get this puppy.
Koda is the “derpy” one of the group. I don’t know if his paws are too big for him or it’s his derpiness but he trips over himself all the time. He doesn’t seem to have brakes or hasn’t figured out how to slow down and stop because every time he is let inside, he runs full speed into the side of the couch or into the front door.
Koda loves attention. If another animal is getting attention from someone then you can be sure he will swoop in and take that attention away for himself and if you stop petting him he will take his paw and smack you with it.
The Cats
We have four cats in our household and each one has their own unique personality. First is Shadow, our big, black, shorthair boy. Then there’s Montana, our beautiful Himalayan Ragdoll. Cyrus is our tuxedo cat and finally Oliver, better known as Ollie, is our mischievous orange tabby.
SHADOW & MONTANA
Shadow and Montana are the oldest and are the same age. Shadow is a gentle giant with a calm personality. He loves attention and will do anything to get it. Montana prefers to keep to herself, but when she wants attention, she’ll let you know by grabbing your hand until you pet her.
CYRUS
Cyrus has quite the story. He was born on St. Patrick’s Day during a snowstorm beside our house and was the only surviving kitten of the litter. Had we not found him when we did, he likely wouldn’t have survived much longer. We bottle-fed him from the beginning, so he’s been a part of our family ever since.
OLIVER (AKA OLLIE)
About a year later, we found Ollie all alone near a construction site. We searched for his owners, but no one came forward, so he became the newest member of our family. My girls know I can never say no to an animal in need. Like most orange cats, he certainly keeps life interesting!
The Sugar Gliders (AKA “Suggies”)
Last, but certainly not least, are our three sugar gliders. They belong to my youngest daughter and she takes care of almost everything they need. My job is mainly buying their food and washing their cage toys and blankets. Our suggies are the most unusual pets in our home and they’re definitely a conversation starter when people find out we have them.
I’ll admit, I’m still learning new things about them myself. They’re fascinating little creatures with their own unique needs and personalities. If you’re not familiar with sugar gliders, don’t worry – I plan to dedicate a future post to explaining exactly what they are, how we care for them and what it’s like living with these tiny nocturnal pets.
So, that’s our little zoo! Between the horses, dogs, cats, and sugar gliders, there’s never a dull moment around here. They all have their own personalities, quirks, and stories to tell, and I can’t wait to share those adventures with you. Thanks for joining me on this journey through Life Between Horses.
