“This is a dangerous horse.”
Those were the last words my friend said before the trailer disappeared down the gravel road.
I stood there replaying those words over and over in my mind.
Dangerous.
That was not what a first time horse owner wants to hear.
Had we made a terrible mistake? Had we overlooked something when we bought Apollo? Was this ever going to work?
Everything happened so quickly. Just a short time ago we were dreaming about the adventures ahead with our first horse. Now I couldn’t stop wondering if we had made the biggest mistake of our lives.
I put my trust in my friend and prayed things would work out – especially for my daughter. She had already fallen in love with Apollo, and I couldn’t imagine having to tell her we might need to sell him and start all over again.
Apollo spent the next few months at my friend’s farm while she worked with him. Every day we wondered how he was doing and hoped she was right – that with training, everything would work out. Then one day she called and told us to come see what Apollo could do. We couldn’t wait to see him again.
When we arrived at her farm, we were in shock. She was riding Apollo… and he was listening.
